Jay Myztroh, Jeremy McKinnies, is a vocalist, conductor, songwriter, composer and music educator. He has become known for soulful singing and energetic live performances most recently through the bands Stono Echo and Nightcrawler. He earned a Master of Music degree in choral conducting from the University of North Florida. His Bachelor of Music degree from Jacksonville University was in Music Theory and Composition.
Myztroh’s experience as a musician is diverse. In 2017, his duo with the late great Paten Locke, called Stono Echo, released the LP Black Diamonds with recording label Full Plate. Cosmic Link, his international collaboration with Ben Dubuisson of High Noon records, based in Bristol, UK, produced the Metaphysical EP in 2022 and their self-titled follow up LP is scheduled for a 2023 release. Some of his music has been featured on various television programs/motion pictures, including How I Met Your Mother and Paramount Pictures’ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of the Shadows.
Along with performing in the popular event band Bold City Classics, he continues to sing with original bands Stono Echo, Cosmic Link, NightCrawler and Myztroh & Friends, for which he is also the composer/pianist for. His creations revolve around themes of love, universal truths, and justice.
As a conductor and educator, he has taught pre-k through collegiate undergraduate levels. He is passionate about conducting in increasing awareness of compositions from all over the African Diaspora. This is demonstrated in his Voices of Mahogany choral concert, where black composers from 7 different countries were showcased. In the community, he has directed the Ritz Voices Children’s Chorus and directed plays for Orange Park Community Theatre (Beauty and the Beast/Matilda). Currently, he teaches private lessons (vocal coaching and beginner piano), serves as a vocal ensemble instructor at JAMS (Jacksonville Arts & Music School) and is the music director for Unity Church for Creative Living.
